Wordpress Troubleshooting
I installed Wordpress on my site and have uploaded a theme. I’m currently having tons of trouble trying to rework the sidebar widgets and such that came with it. Can you point me to some good links or books that can help me with the editing the CSS/HTML of a Wordpress blog? I don’t mind doing the homework I’m just not sure where to look.
Well, that’s a good question, because I’m working on a redesign of my Wordpress blog at GeekBrief.TV! :)
I have four links for you. The first is the Support Forum at Wordpress.org. This may seem like the obvious choice, and I do suggest searching there for keywords about your problem, but it can sometimes be difficult to find answers here. You might come across other people’s posts about your same issue (which will make you feel like you’re not crazy!) but a lot of times, issues haven’t been resolved. Many times, if I’ve run into a specific issue I can’t resolve, I’ll google part of the code or issue and include “wordpress” in the search. That’ll usually bring me right to Wordpress Support posts that have already been submitted, as well as random sites where you might find an answer. So, be as specific as you can in your search. If you don’t easily find a solution, don’t spend hours getting frustrated. Move on to the other options.
Tamba2 Wordpress Guides are great, complete how-tos. Perfect for a Wordpress beginner.
Wordpress Docs will help explain a lot of the code terms and usage, and by understanding that, you’ll be able to troubleshoot more effectively.
One of my favorite sites for getting HTML and CSS code is w3schools.com. Great, great site.

Wordpress has text widgets you can paste HTML in. Worth checking with a validator, though. I’ve recently been looking for a nice visual stylesheet editor to use with Wordpress. I just bought a copy of CSSEdit for Mac from the Belgian http://macrabbit.com/ Only just started using it, but looks promising. You can preview and edit in side-by-side windows, so you see the results of your changes. Using it in conjunction with Mamp for local work. Hope this is useful.

Don’t be afraid to talk to the theme authors directly. Chances are (if they’re willing to create and release a theme) that they’re the helpful sort. They’ll also probably get a kick out of knowing someone is using their theme.
After switching from Movable Type, I whipped up a theme (”Ahem”, http://www.dennis.ca/weblog/ahem-wordpress-theme/) based on Hemmed. I answer all questions I receive as time permits.
A lot of the WP-specific support/theme blogs are also helpful. Many theme problems are common regardless of what theme you’re using, so someone familiar with web design and WP can usually steer you in the right direction pretty quickly.
You may need a spambot as well, as you will get shocked by your increase in the canned visitors. Check Wordpress for what’s avalaible.
