Wikis

Q

I am starting University in September and I want to keep everything organized; lecture notes, general notes, events, etc etc. I remember you covering how you use a blog to keep track of all your stuff a while back and am wondering whether this would be a good option for me. I have investigated wordpress, and Google Docs and am wondering about using a Wiki software throughout Uni. Can you help me, what would you recommend, and what are the pros and cons of each for University use.

A

Wordpress and Wikis are great options for organizing information. Ever since I started using Wordpress to organize my information, I’ve imagined it would be perfect for students. With Wordpress, you can use tags to organize your posts so you can pull up the desired information quickly. The downside is that posts will be in random order, but again, if you use tags effectively, you only need to look at the posts that contain information you want.

There are several free Wiki options, including PBWiki, WikiSpaces, and Zoho Wiki. You use pages to organize information with a Wiki, rather than posts like with Wordpress, so you might want a page per class. If you have some projects where you collaborate with others, think about setting up a second wiki and share the password with your classmates. After all, Wikis were designed so that everyone involved can comment, add information, etc.

If, after looking at both options, you’re not sure which is the right solution for you, consider spending a week where you use both at the same time. It will take a little more time, but you’ll quickly figure out what works best for your workflow.

    Dear Cali ;)

Thanks for your info! I’m interested in the same technology (I think wordpress is fine) to organize my stuff for university. But I’m really concerned about security. Because I want to add some scans and so on. Do you think htaccess protection is good to prevent access? Because there will be some copyright material wich is of course then only for my eyes to learn. Is it hard to bruteforce htaccess protected websites?

    Best Regards

    Markus

I have two private blogs with htaccess. It’s easy to set up your Wordpress blog to be private. And when you set up a wiki, you can set it to be private or public. Some wiki sites charge for private access. I’ve never had an issue.

    Hi Cali and all,

I’m looking for a wiki I can run off my own home network at home so the rest of my family can access it via the network?
