Using the iPhone Outside the US

I know the iPhone is not yet available in Canada (same as the Microsoft Zune). I live only about 20 minutes away from the border so it would not take much to get to the States to purchase an iPhone. If I got an iPhone and brought it home would I be able to use it? I am not even sure if we have AT&T up here. Please try to help me as I am sure many Canadians want an iPhone as well and I was also wondering that if I could use one in Canada what would the monthly cost be?

In order for you to use the iPhone in another country, you would have to have a US account with AT&T, and unfortunately, you would have to pay international roaming rates when you’re home.
Today I read that Jon Lech Johansen, otherwise known as DVD Jon, has found a way to activate JUST the iPod and WiFi from a Windows computer. Details are here.

Thanks for the link! But I guess I’ll wait for T-Mobile Germany to sell the iPhone :) From all I saw the phone is really cool. Although I guess that a .lot of Germans don’t like T-Mobile and will think twice before buying one. Best Regards. Markus
Well, I hope some Brazilian mobile company start selling it soon! In the meantime I will save some money. Americans are complaining about paying US$500 for a phone… Well, that’s the average high-end phone pricing in Brazil. I will be lucky if I pay less than the equivalent to US$1500 when it arrives here :-(
I can confirm that it works outside the US but you would have to pay the AT&T roaming rates. I used it in the Bahamas and it cost $2 a minute and 2cents a KB for data. Not cheap. But you COULD do it.
Does anyone know if it is possible to get a T-Mobile contract in Germany with an iPhone bought in the US? It sounds like a silly question I know but the USD is horrible compared to the Euro. Since I live in Germany and my parents are in the US I thought it would be good to get a phone in the US and activate it in Germany.
