Tagging Podcasts

Q

I started a podcast a month ago, and I’ve heard stuff about tagging your podcast, but I don’t know what that means exactly. What am I supposed to be doing that I’m obviously not?

A

Tagging a podcast is all about information about your show, including the show number, name, album, contact information, etc. If you want to get technical, it’s called meta data. I’ll explain how, but first let me explain why. Regardless of how someone watches or listens to your show, it’s important that they’re able to find your contact information, and it’s important to title your shows consistently so they’re organized in your viewers/listeners podcatcher.

Now for the how. Drag your podcast into iTunes. If it’s an audio show, it’ll import into “Music”, and if it’s a video show, it will import into “Movies”. Right click and choose “Get Info”. You’ll see several Tabs. Fill out all the information.  I put my email address and Web site address in the “Comments” box.  Just remember to be consistent!  To change your podcasts’ album art, click here for directions.

Most podcasts are subscribed to in iTunes so I highly recommend using iTunes tags as a standard. I’m trying to get software conversion companies to incorporate tagging (aka ID3 tagging) for iTunes into the conversion process, but until they do, just drag the file into iTune and get info.

again, i want to do my plug for iLife and garage band. garage band does a lot of this work for you, let’s you choose to put artwork for the whole episode (akin to “album artwork”) as well as different artwork for each marker chapter section you might set throughout you podcast, and then also let’s choose “track info” on the podcast and fill in all the info cali mentions above. very hip. and, if you have a standard set of same info from podcast to podcast, you can either “save as…” from a previous podcast, or set up an applescript or automator workflow that would fill in all the regular basic info for you.

you know how obsessing and how much outright *fun* garage band is?? i opened it to make sure i was giving the right info on this and then i started just fiddling here and there with a track i was working on, adjusting different instrument sounds, etc., and that was… TWO HOURS AGO, before i finally posted this. sheesh. time to go to bed! hawr!
