Split Video

Q

I was wondering if there is a free app. for splitting MP4 video? I would like to keep certain parts of the show, but not the entire show, or podcast. This way I could split the video and keep only the parts that I would like to archive, and my iPod wouldn’t explode due to lack of storage.

Quicktime Pro is the easiest way to cut out parts of a video you don’t want, and you can do it with many different video formats.

In this example, I have a video I’ve downloaded off Break.com called “Dog is Bad at Playing Dead“. The dog’s name is Cali. Guess why I chose it. :) If I want to keep part of this video, but not all of it, I can open it in Quicktime Pro to edit it.

Hover your mouse over the time marker, and you’ll get in and out markers.

Drag the out marker to where you want the video to end, then drag the in marker to where you want the video to start. Click on the “Edit” menu, then “Trim to Selection”. The point here is what’s inside the markers is what you’ll wind up with in your final video. Save your video when you have the selection you want.

Quicktime Pro is $29.99, and is available on both PCs and Macs. You can learn about joining files with Quicktime Pro here, and learn about joining Xvid files here.
