Share a Mouse Between Computers

Q

I use multiple computers at once and get so tired of of having to use a flash drive or some other means (depending on the file size) just to get a file from one computer to the other. I know I sound spoiled, but I don’t think I am alone in this. Wouldn’t it be great if you are running two separate computers, both running the same os, both with the same apps installed, and you could simply drag a final cut window to the other?

A

I have just the thing for you. Synergy allows you to “connect” two computers, regardless of operating system. You can drag windows from the monitor on your left to the monitor on your right. The software merges the clipboards, allowing you to copy from one computer and paste to the other. If you’re working in an application and don’t want your mouse to jump between computers, you can turn it off temporarily.

Unfortunately, Vista is not supported.

UPDATE: Apparently, it does work on Vista. :) Thanks, Jason!

Not exactly what the reader had in mind, but for Mac systems Teleport allows you to drag your mouse right off one desktop and on to the other. You can then use your main mouse and keyboard on, for example, your laptop. Syncs the clipboard, allows dragging and dropping of files, etc.

Actually, Vista is supported. I’ve been using it on Vista since launch. :)

Synergy rocks. I use it to join three desktops into one, and as computers come and go (eg. my laptop) they pop in and out of the continuum of screens.

Synergy is excellent. I’ve used it on the two desktops and one laptop on my desk at work for over a year. The amazing thing is that it just works for me. No hiccups. That is rare.

The geometry of my desktop is such that I can put a computer in the corner but it’s hard to reach the keyboard and mouse so I just use Synergy to use one keyboard and mouse for all three. Then I can put reference materials down where the keyboards and mice would be.

I’m with Dave — it rocks.
