Screen Capture Software

Do you know of any good, but free screen recorders for Mac OS X (like HyperCam for Windows)?

We use an application called IShowU to record video captures. It’s very easy to use, and costs $20 for Mac users. ScreenCastsOnline uses SnapzProX. It’s $69 and is Mac only. I haven’t been able to find a free version for Macs that will capture video.
For Windows users, Hypercam is an option for $35. CamStudio and Growler Guncam are free versions. Growler Guncam is geared toward making movies out of your game, but it can be used in other applications, and you can add some effects.

Jing (from TechSmith) was just released. It’s free for Mac and PC users for now. It only saves in Flash (.swf), so take that into consideration for your project.

I also use Jing for Mac. I’ve been looking around a lot for a free solution and nothing is available for Macs. So I use Jing. I am wondering though if you would know a free solution to convert swf files to mov or even mp4 files.
Thanx!
Great tips. I use Camtasia 5, because I got work to pay for it. (Nice to have deep pockets.) But, lots of people doing this on their own can’t shell out hundreds of dollars for each piece of software that they need.
It’s great to be able to point people to good, free software to help them solve simple problems.
Thanks
Snapper is also worth checking out. It is here on macupdate.com: http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/25290/snapper
Dont forget Windows Media Encoder 9 (free) for PC from Microsoft. It records the screen and audio and is used for all sorts of PC WM* type encoding.
I use it to record real time screen captures - it only saves in WMV format for video and I think it is only Windows. Works great though and free.
You can tell it to record a window, section of the screen or the whole screen and you get the expected encoding options for file size and rate.
CamStudio is a great program. Being free is even better. I am very pleased with its performance!
Hello Cali,
For folks using Jing that seek to convert their .swf’s into a huge array of other video formats…
I highly recommend Zamzar.com (100 Meg file size limit with free usage; tons of different file type conversions).
