Ripping DVDs

Q

I have been trying to rip my DVD collection for use with Apple TV with limited success and was hoping you might have a solution. I’m on a PC, so there might be limited suggestions for that, but any ideas would be appreciated.

A

My favorite application for ripping DVDs is Handbrake. It works on both PCs and Macs, and it has support for iPod, Apple TV and PSP. They actually just did a big update.

Step 1: Download Handbrake here.

Step 2: Insert a DVD. Handbrake will pull it up as an option. Choose “Open”.

Step 3: Handbrake will scan the DVD.

Step 4: The application will have pre-set settings for the completed file. You can choose to keep the settings, change them, or if you want the file to work on AppleTV, iPod or PSP, choose the appropriate Presets option from the menu on the right.

Step 5: Choose “Start” and Handbrake will begin the ripping process. This takes the same amount of time as the movie, so go find something else to do!

Step 6: Once it’s completed, drag the file into iTunes under the Movies option. You’re ready to watch on Apple TV, your iPod, or your PSP!

Keep in mind, the MPAA doesn’t approve of this in any way.

So, tried Handbrake and am unfortunately getting the same result I was getting with some other programs. The aspect ratio seems to be off when playing on Apple TV. I used the Apple TV present and changed nothing. Essentially what I get is bars above and on the sides of the move on my flat screen so that it plays in a smaller format than my screen. The ratio seems right, it is just smaller. It looks fine (just top and bottom bars) when you play it back on the computer in iTunes, but for some reason the image doesn’t fill the screen with the AppleTV playback. Any suggestions appreciated!

Have you played with settings on your TV? For example, mine has a “Wide” button, and there are different configurations for stretching an image.

I can definitely do that, but it seems odd to have to, if that makes sense. Movies purchased from iTunes and sometimes ripped fill the screen without issue or certainly just with bars on the top and bottom. This odd thing here is the bars on the top, bottom and sides. I’ll snap a pic and send it to you. Wondering if it has something to do with the Anamorphic setting on handbrake. I’ll try ripping a movie both ways and report back.

    Thanks!
