Registering your own name

I recall you saying at the end of one of your podcasts that everybody should register their own name. So I did that along with some other domain names. In thinking about it, I can’t figure out what I would do with it. Maybe I missed it, but why is it so important to have my name registered? My other sites are business related, so I can figure out that, but is it really necessary to toot my own horn and list things about myself and a picture for others to find? Especially when one already has Facebook and sites like that telling a whole lot of stuff about yourself already. Any insight as to why you suggested this (if you did) would be appreciated.

In a recent Brief, I suggested that everyone should register yourname.com. Not everyone has the luxury of having their name available, but if you do, snatch it up now!
For people like me, who live our lives online, it’s an obvious choice to register our names. For others, like this DearCali.com reader, it can be puzzling. What’s the point for someone who socializes pretty much only with his friends online, maybe has business related Web sites, and that’s it?
The first reason you want to register your own name is to take it off the shelf. You never know when you might decide to use it in the future, so if it’s available, grab it! I never suggest building a vanity site. If you’re not going to use it to create a personal blog, point it at something else you’re doing, or something else you care about. You can point it at your business, you can point it at a charity, or you can host it and start blogging.
It’s very simple. If you don’t grab an available domain name when you have a chance, you’re likely to regret it when it’s in someone else’s hands.
