Recording Skype Calls

Q

My friend and I want to start a podcast, but we live 300miles away from each other so I thought we could maybe use Skype to record it. After looking around I can’t really find an application for recording Skype calls. Do you know a good (free) application that runs on my MacBook?

A

If your friend also has a Mac, you can use iChat and GarageBand. What’s really great about that solution is how GarageBand breaks the audio out into a different track for each participant.

The application I use to record Skype calls is Call Recorder. It’s very simple to use and I’ve always gotten very good quality. It’s Mac only and it costs $14.95. Wire Tap Pro is also a great Mac only program. It’s $19. Neither are free, but they’re inexpensive.

Pamela is a free Skype recorder for Windows and has a loyal user base. MX Skype Recorder is $14.95.

Alternatively, if you’re not tied to Skype for some reason, Gizmo Project (http://gizmoproject.com/) includes recording calls without any additional software.

This is a step-by-step tutorial for recording Skype calls on a Mac using Audio Hijack and SoundFlower, both free:
