Podcasting as a Business

How do you monetize your podcast show? I mean… you have to eat. I can tell that you and Neal are having fun and working hard (or is it the other way around), but how do you make money? And how do I, as a fellow podcaster, do the same?

I get this question probably more than any other. The answer is simple. Podcasting can be advertising supported just like TV and radio. If you have an audience, advertisers want to reach that audience. You can get advertisers for your show by partnering with a company that knows what they’re doing, or learn yourself and work really hard.
We’re partnered with PodShow Network, who works to make deals with sponsors for us. This allows us to focus on the show instead of dealing with sales. Imagine what life would be like for the producers of Heros if they had to write and produce shows AND pitch to Madison Ave. There are lots of ways to do it, and I’m absolutely biased, but I don’t know of anyone doing anything like what PodShow is doing for podcasters.
PodShow Network also hosts our videos. We teamed up with them early on, after we got shut down by a hosting company when we used too much bandwidth. PodShow has different levels of involvement. At the basic level, you can get free hosting for your show. At the top level, you’ll have the financing to quit your day job and podcast full time. There are other levels in between.
After you have an established show and you’re interested in joining PodShow, email jointheshow@podshow.com. You can also do it all yourself, it’s just much harder that way.
You also have to be willing to do a lot of work. We’re working on GeekBrief.TV more than we’ve ever worked at anything…ever! You have to have passion for your subject. Choose a topic you care about. Spend time planning the format for your show. It’s easy to get excited about your idea and want to jump right in, but having a well designed format will make a big difference. Then, go for it!!! Have fun doing it! Share your excitement with your audience.

Thank you for the information, you have some very helpful hints for starting a video/podcast as a business.
This is awesome. I have spent over 22 years working in high-end HD traditional TV productio, primarily as a Director of Photography. I am now seeing clearly the democracy that is web 2.0 and podcasting etc. And you guys do a great job. Any tips on how I should transfer my skills to my own web / podcasting presence. But, thanks for the inspiration and tips. Cheers
