Play Podcasts on the iPod Back to Back

Q

I listen mostly to podcasts, and have yet to figure out how to get multiple podcasts into an arrangement in the iPod where it will play them back in succession without stopping between them. If you know a way to do this, PLEASE let me know!

A

You can listen to your podcasts back to back on your computer or your iPod by creating a Playlist. In iTunes, go to File/New Playlist and give your playlist a name. I call mine “Cali’s Podcasts”.

Drag the podcasts you want to listen to or watch that day to the playlist.

Plug your iPod in, and click on the iPod name so you get the control panel. Click on the “Music” tab at the top. If you have it set to sync selected playlists, make sure you check the box beside your new playlist. Then click “Apply”.

If you have a video iPod, you can mix both video and audio, but you have to browse to the playlist from the video menu to make that work.

If you just want to listen to audio, you can choose Playlists from the main menu on your iPod, and choose your playlist.

If you want to make it slightly more automated, create an Auto Playlist. Select “where podcast is true” in the options and any other additional options you wish to chose.

Among other filters, I add “where play count is 0″, so the playlist automatically updates with podcasts I haven’t listened to yet.

I also create one for Old Podcasts where the play count is greater than 0, so that I can easily uncheck all of those files at one time to make sure they don’t waste space on my Nano.

Tried this. Both on my video and nano (both late versions). Result is this….Podcast One plays. Goes back to menu. Have to manually play Podcast Two. Goes back to menu. I’ve got to have a setting screwy somewhere, but can’t find it. My goal is to have the iPod progress from one Podcast to the next without intervention. Seems easy enough….but SOOOOO far away. BTW….the idea about the Old Podcasts playlist for deletion management is FANTASTIC.

    Thanks for the suggestions, bfos7215!

@Steve: Are you trying to mix audio and video? If so, on the iPod, are you choosing Videos/Video Playlists/ then your playlist name?

@Steve: Do you have shuffle Songs selected in your settings. I can reproduce the issue you are describing when I turn shuffle songs on and play from my playlist. Turn shuffle off and see what happens.

I love they things you can do with auto playlists in iTunes, and it is probably better than other media players, but it still could easily be so much better. I just don’t understand why it’s so hard for these companies to put out a good program.

You can also use the Smart Playlist options to keep your podcasts playing.

Steve: I also had this problem. I got around it by having at least one song (not podcast) in my playlist, which otherwise has only pdocasts.
