NAS vs. Windows Home Server
Quick question… Why would I want a home server when I can get a NAS drive, for what appears to be less money? What do I gain with something like the Microsoft Home server vs a NAS drive like the Western Digital My Book World Edition? Won’t these both serve as a way to share data and applications to only those I allow access?
The main differences between the My Book World Edition and Windows Home Server (WHS) is that WHS offers printer sharing and media streaming, which the My Book doesn’t. Most important to me, WHS seems to be really well liked by people who have tried it out.
The MyBook begins at $380 for a 500GB drive. Windows Home Server is a software from Microsoft that they license to distributors like HP, who will be offering the WHS software in their MediaSmart Home Server. The HP device will start at $599 for 500GB.

The windows home server does enable printer sharing but there are many NASes that offer that as well as other things. For example the NAS i own will serve a webpage, serve as a FTP server, stream media to the network, automatically backup my computer, and download torrents and other files on its own. You can also expand it for mirroring with a usb harddrive. This product with 1TB of self installed storage (2×500GB drives) comes to $549.97 from newegg.com heres the links to the HDs im using and the NAS.

Sorry, it just sounds like a crazy idea for me :)…
My concern would be Mac & PC compatibility with WHS…I’ve heard that it doesn’t support Macs right now. However, a Linux-based NAS should support just about anything connecting to it, right?
I bought a WDMBworldedition1 it worked beautifully for about a week or two then I started to get the ‘failed mount’ error. Search this has revealed that it seems to be a horrible product with lots of people in forums clamoring for a class action suit.
In addition to this the WDAnywhereBackUp software functions poorly, especially when compared with WD’s previous backup software that was simple and actually worked.
If only drobo wasn’t so damn expensive!
