Mobile Broadband

Q

Which mobile company offers wireless connectivity for Mac users? Verizon, Cingular, Sprint?

A

They all offer wireless connectivity for both PCs and Macs. We just signed up for Sprint service after a ton of research. Sprint has the fastest connection. They have three ways to connect: PCI, Express and USB. We chose the Express card and like it very much.

It’s important to take a look at the coverage maps to make sure you’re going to get the best coverage in your area. Having a really fast connection, without good coverage in your area won’t help so much. ;)

I signed up fr the Sprint as well, and it works well, but to say it is the fastest, I think that is not correct. I can niether comfirm, nor deny that Cingular might be faster as of right now. The reason I went with Sprint is that they were the cheapest, and will be the fastest in a year or so when their new technology comes out! Also, for you gamers out there, take a look at DL.tv episode 162. Patrick talks about Verizon’s policy on gaming and 1 person who gets kicked off for using the card to game with! Sprint has a very libral term of service. READ THE FINE PRINT! Love Da Brief Cali!

I have been using Verizon’s PCI card for Mac the last month. I was able to get the PCI card for free and it has added about $50 to my account (current Verizon customer) for unlimited access. I use it at work to get information for educational blogging. It has worked great in airports that do not have free wideless access and recently in New York City. The download speed is around 1.5 mb per/sec but upload speed is slo……ow. Work has anything that has “blog, video, and TV” blocked. In fact I can not get the Geekbrief at work they have you blocked.

Thanks so much for answering this question! I am a mac user who is considering getting a wireless card so I can read/watch all the blogs/podcasts I subscribe to on my trainrides in/out of of NYC (it was really easy to keep up with them when I was working from home). I spend about 2-3 hours a day riding on the train, so being able to safely get online during that time would be a great thing.
