MicroBlogging Sites

Q

I am a fairly new user of the microblogging platforms but have created accounts on Twitter, Jaiku, and Pownce. As of right now I really only use Twitter and besides occasional posting, my use revolves around following people (yourself included) whose updates I find interesting (which usually means they talk about tech stuff). What I am more interested however, is choosing one of the platforms on which to get people I ACTUALLY know to join in. I noticed you have accounts on all three and was wondering if you felt any one of them ranks above the others.

A

Microblogging is subscribe-able SMS. Twitter was the start of the microblogging phenomenon. The site is extremely simple. You send out tweets (a message in 140 characters or less), and anyone who is following you will get the tweet, either by looking at the site, via SMS, or instant message.

If someone who is following you wants to reply to something you said, they can “@reply” you, by putting “@YourUsername” and you’ll see that reply, even if you don’t follow them. When people have lots of conversations using the @reply method, it can be frustrating to someone who doesn’t know what’s going on in that conversation.

I like Pownce the most because it gives us the ability to have a conversation in more of an organized manner. I’ve always hesitated to @reply someone on Twitter so I don’t annoy people. Pownce allows me the freedom to reply to people and know that the conversation is fully trackable.

Jaiku seems to be the least popular site. Leo Laporte, who had left Twitter for trademark reasons, decided he was getting lonely over there at Jaiku, and decided to join the fun again. :)

Some people like to use Twitter as a way to keep people updated on what they’re doing, and use Pownce as a way to ask their friends what they think about an idea. One nice thing about Twitter is they give you the ability to add widgets to your sites.
Show your friends the options and see what they like best.

I kind of remember a podcast about seeing a podcast from you on setting up an iphone for twitter. I might be imagining things, but if you have could you give me a lead?

    Hi Cali,

can you please tell me how to look for some tags in these micro-blogging sites? Say, i want to read what people are talking about “KFC” on these sites, how to look for that info? Is there some kind of “search” on these sites or some kind of archiving?

I recently started a microblogging project called i-Feel. It’s a micro blogging style site (ala twitter), that connects users through emotions. Users can quickly blog about how they feel and connect with other users that feel the same. Once connected they can track each other’s latest emotions. Every emotion you post is public (the emotion pool), but all connections with you are private. The site is currently in beta. Any feedback is welcome.
