Merging Volume of Songs on iPod

My question is about the differing volume levels that I have noticed in songs played on my iPod. I recently purchased some songs through Amazon.com. The Amazon songs are much louder when played on my iPod through an FM transmitter in my car than the songs that I have ripped (yes, I am a thief according to Sony) and have bought from iTunes. Is there a way to make my non-Amazon songs louder, so that I don’t have to keep adjusting the volume? Louder works much better in my car. Is it louder because of the increased bit-rate in the Amazon songs? Is there a setting to adjust?

The simplest way to make all your songs play back at the same volume is to go into iTunes Preferences.

Under the “Playback” section, check the “Sound Check” box. This causes all your songs to be played back at the same level. The effect is kind of a meshing of volumes, so it’ll bring the softest songs up a bit and the loudest songs down a bit to meet in the middle. You can also increase the “Sound Enhancer” bar to high.

The reason your Amazon songs are louder is because they were encoded by Amazon rather than ripped, or encoded by iTunes. This is worth mentioning…Wednesday, Apple announced that 2 million DRM free songs are now available on iTunes for .99 cents.
