Maximizing a Window on a Mac

Q

Don`t get me wrong, I love OSX and would never switch back to Windows, but as many OSX users I am annoyed by the unpredictable nature of the green button. Is there any app or apple script that can force the green button to ALWAYS maximize the window to full screen?

A

The green “+” button in OS X is designed to open the window to it’s maximum size based on the content of that window, so you don’t have a lot of excessive white space.  Some users, like you and me, want to focus specifically on one window at a time when using a smaller screen.  There’s a SIMBL plugin that allows you to choose behaviors of any Cocoa based apps, like Safari and Text Edit, and others.

If you don’t already have SIMBL installed, you’ll need to download this first.  Click Here.  Then you can download a plugin called Stoplight, found here.

Note: The download button on that page seems to be broken at the time that I’m writing this, but you can get a good link from here.

Once you’ve downloaded Stoplight, open the folder and drag the “StoplightHack.bundle” into ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/ on your computer.

Double click “Stoplight.prefPane” to start customizing your applications.

Anytime you want to add or change something, you can open System Preferences, then Stoplight from “Other”.

Mac OS X is very powerful and has many modifier keys for instance if you hold down option when you click the green plus button then the window is maximized to full screen (apple call it the zoom button). Another helpful modifier is to hold down the option key when minimizing a window, this minimizes all the windows (like windows-D on XP).

Thanks, Heath! Great tip about the option key for minimizing. Unfortunately, I’ve tried the option for maximizing and it’s never been successful for me. :(

Wonderful! just what i was looking for! Is there any way to do the same with non-cocoa apps?

I haven’t found one. If anyone knows of something, let us know!
