Making Money with Tech

Q

I am a 16 year old high-school student with absolutely no money, but a lot of tech know-how and savvy. Are there any up and coming technologies or ideas that maybe I could jump into to maybe make a difference in the tech community? I know that this question sounds general, but I have been weighing out the options and I wanted to see what you would have to say.

A

There are two areas in technology that I’m extremely excited about right now. HID (Human Interface Device) research is finally resulting in products available to everyday consumers. You see it with Jeff Haan’s research and Microsoft’s Surface. You hold it in your hand when you use an iPhone or play the Wii. HID is all about developing new and better ways to interact with technology. The future isn’t going to be about keyboards and mice, it’s going to be based on what HID researchers are working on now.

I’m predicting widespread adoption of home automation technology in the next few years. The ability to control all the electronics in your home at the touch of a button has been available to wealthy people and geeks for years. Some systems cost $100,000 but several companies are working one solutions that are affordable for everyone. New home automation technology isn’t only affordable, it’s also easy to use.

Regardless of what is “new and up and coming”, it’s more important that you focus on what you’re passionate about. Are you passionate about gaming and programming? Take a look at the Xbox Media Center project (XBMC). If you want to be a tech professional, decide what it is you care about most, then pursue it. There are lots of ways to get involved, and you may consider making yourself available to someone who is doing what you want to do, even if it means no pay for a little while. You can learn a lot and make important contacts in the process.
