Is Blu-ray Backwards Compatible?

Q

It has finally come time for me to replace me creaking old laptop and I was considering buying the Sony Vaio VGN-FZ11Z, which comes with a Blu-Ray Drive in it. What I want to know is can this drive also play/record normal CDs & DVDs?

A

Both HD-DVD and Blu-ray drives are backwards compatible. The manufacturer actually has to decide whether or not to include the BD/DVD/CD compatible optical head in order for it to be backwards compatible, but it would be a mistake for a manufacturer not to opt for that. When you’re looking at full specs on the computer you want to buy, it will list under the Optical Drive information whether it reads and writes CDs and DVDs. You’ll see “Read: CD-R, DVD+RW, Write: DVD+R…”, etc.
