Can you explain why sometimes when I am using my iPhone (usually Maps or Safari) it will sometimes seem to hesitate, and then close the program and return to the home screen? When I re-open the program it is right where I left it, and it only takes like an extra second, but I wonder if I’m doing something wrong or if it’s some necessary iPhone process.

You’re not doing anything wrong.  That’s just one of the joys of being an early adopter!  :)  It’s a crash. The same thing is probably happening to Steve Jobs. The great thing about iPhone is that bugs can be fixed with an update, so hang in there. It’ll get better. :)
