Getting Songs/Podcasts onto Your iPod from Two iTunes Collections

Q

When I connect my iPod to another computer, it wipes off what I had on there. Is there a way around that, so I can keep what I had, AND add additional stuff from a second iTunes collection?

A

There are third party apps, like Floola, that allow you to manage your iPod without iTunes, but you already have what you need in iTunes.

In iTunes, when you connect your iPod to a different computer, it will give you this warning:

Click “Cancel”. Then click on your iPod name in the left hand column. Click on “Manually manage music”.

Now you can drag the items you want from the new library onto your iPod without messing with your existing songs or podcasts.

RockBox is a much better solution than either iTunes or Floola AND it replaces the iPod UI with a much more robust interface. I have been using it on Nano, Video (60GB), and Photo (60GB) iPods with superb results and it is very stable. Not good support yet for videos or video podcasts yet (better support coming) BUT it does dual-boot into the old iPod UI where nothing has changed! See my blog for links to site and instructions for installing.

Hey Cali, I have a Compaq V2000 computer from 1999, but my dad (who is a viewer) refuses to buy a new modem… Can you please try to convince him!

Mmmm, maybe something has changed with the latest version of iTunes.

When I tried this (I’ve done it before) on a new machine that I wanted to get some MP3’s from, when I hit cancel, the iPod never shows up in iTunes.

    Sad Code Monkey

@Bob: Have you tried quitting iTunes and trying it again or is it happening every time? I double checked on the newest version of iTunes just to make sure nothing had changed since I did it last and I didn’t have any problems.

Also, are you on a PC or Mac?

@ Cali - I will check this too - my daughters are 7 & 5 and each have an iPod - but they use my laptop to update their music.

I tried the suggested method on my MacBook Pro using version 7.2 (34) and as soon as I hit the ‘Cancel’ option the ipod is not listed on the left.

I will try this on a Windows machine and let you know if there is a different result.

PS: thanks for the mention on brief 188 :-)
