Free SMS Messages

Q

Do you know a website where I can send free SMS messages to cell phones internationally? I used to know some sites that did that in the past, but it seems much more difficult to find such a service nowadays!

A

Try Oh Don’t Forget. You can select from certain international providers from this page. They’re working on adding more providers all the time. Send SMS Now is taking a social networking approach to online international text messaging. You can activate free email alerts for any unread messages at the end of the day, set up groups of friends to easily send messages to (this part of the service costs), and send photos to friends’ phones from your computer. I did notice there isn’t support for iPhone. :)

For those of you who are looking for free text messages within the US and Canada, TxtDrop is another option. Peekamo allows you to mask your number while still being able to receive replies. It’s my understanding they don’t use traditional SMS, but rather sponsored, short message peer-to-peer, so that neither the sender nor the recipient pays for the message. They’ll be adding international support in the future.

i hesitate to answer this one so simply, as i’m not quite sure what he’s asking — is he asking that it be free to *send* the text message, or free for the person receiving it?

i don’t know of a way to make it free to the person who is receiving it on the cell/smart phone — once a text has been sent to your cell phone, you get charged for the text message. however, for sending there’s a rather easy & elegant solution to avoid cost in both aol’s AIM and iChat for the mac.

in either of those IMs, open a new chat window and tell it the “screen name” for the person you’re sending to is “+[international country code & city code][the phone number].” so as an example, to send to a friend’s cell phone in san francisco, calif., u.s.a., i’d put in as the screen name “+14155552222″ (without the quotes, of course). then send a text message just as if you were sending an IM. you’ll get a confirmation that your text message has now been sent to a mobile device.

one thing to be aware of — regular sms messengers won’t let you type over the character limit, usually 160 characters, tops. you have to make sure you haven’t typed too long a message, or it will be truncated on the other end for the receiver.

i hope this is what they were looking for.

Really ther’s no mystery to the question. He’s asking for a free service that sends free text messaging. Im telling you guys that peekamo uses a shortcode that enables you to send FREE text messaging. No one is charged. It wouldnt be free if peekamo charged the receiver. Right????

ok, i’ll check out peekamo, but whether you’re using thet service or not to eliminate text message charges to the receiver, i think the AIM/iChat solution is pretty cool.

That was my question (in the Phones section of GBTVtalk.com).
As Mark said, all I want is to send an SMS without (me) paying for it.

Unfortunately, none of the mentioned services helped. ‘Oh Don’t Forget’ and ‘Send SMS Now’ both don’t send to any of the countries I need. Peekamo needs me to be in north america to register me. And the AIM trick always fails and return the message “The person is not currently online”.
