Custom iPhone Ringtones

Q

I heard the new Garageband lets us make our own ringtones. How do I do it?

A

If you’re on a Mac, you can create custom ringtones in the latest version of GarageBand. You’ll need GarageBand 4.1.1, iTunes 7.5 or later, and your iPhone needs to be version 1.1.2 or later.

You can use a song you have on your computer, or record something yourself. Import the file into GarageBand, and edit it to be 40 seconds or less. Click on “Share”, then “Send Ringtone to iTunes”.

Next time you sync your iPhone, the new ringtone will be available. To activate it on the iPhone for all calls, go to Settings/Sounds/Ringtone. If you want the ringtone to be specific to a particular caller, go into Phone/choose the Contact’s name/Ringtone, then choose the new Ringtone.

Easier option is to rename any *.m4a file shorter than 30 secs to *.mvr. Than double click it and iTunes will import is as an ringtone. (optionaly let iTunes do an MP3 to AAC conversion)

Can you do this with a PC… Without having to buy the song from iTunes? I have an extensive CD collection, and don’t want to buy songs that I already own.

    Thanks,
