Converting Files for iPod and AppleTV

How do I convert existing files to play on my iPod and AppleTV?

For PCs:
MPEG Streamclip is a free converter for both PCs and Macs. It converts to QuickTime, DV/DV50, AVI/DivX and MPEG-4.
iPod Video Converter is also a free converter, but it’s PC only.
For Macs:
iSquint is a free converter that simply converts to iPod-friendly files.
VisualHub converts to iPod, PSP, DV, DVD, TiVo, AVI, MP4, WMV, MPEG and Flash. It’s $23.32 and it’s worth at least twice that.
