Convert Xvid/DivX to AppleTV

Q

I have a friend who downloads bittorrent files. I would never do that! Usually, those files are encoded as XVid AVI’s. He has an AppleTV, and he’d like to get watch them on AppleTV. Can you recommend an application to convert files to be AppleTV ready?

A

Mac Users:
If you have Quicktime Pro installed, all you need to do is install the correct codec of whatever type of file you want to convert. Then, in Quicktime Pro, click File/Export, and you’ll see an option to export “Movie to AppleTV”. I don’t have Quicktime Pro for Windows, but I’m sure the same would be true. Here are links to the Codecs your friend will need:

Xvid Codec
DivX Codec
WMV Codec

If you want to batch convert several files to be AppleTV ready, Jason Vallery wrote an excellent step-by-step guide explaining how to batch convert for Apple TV using Automator.

Windows Users:
Again, Quicktime Pro for Windows should do the trick, but here are some other options:

Wondershare - Windows - $29.95
Apex - Windows - $23
Crazi Video - $29.95

I haven’t tried any of the Windows apps, so if anyone has a better solution for Windows or can vouch for one of these, please chime in by leaving a comment.

Visual Hub will convert the files MUCH faster than Quicktime. I highly recommend it.

There is lots of good video encoders out there for Windows users, some are even free like “SUPER” and “MeGUI”. I’ve tested them booth though I prefer the slightly more complicated MeGUI over the much more user friendly SUPER, because of the video quality.
