Cleaning Computer Screens

Q

I have a macbook and the screen is full of finger prints, what’s best to remove them? I remember on my imac using some lcd wipes, they just left a chalky surface though and didn’t really remove the smears. What do you recommend?

A

I use Digital Innovations Screen Cleaning Spray. It comes with a microfiber covered tool shaped like a squeegee. Spray the cleaning liquid on the microfiber cloth and wipe the screen. I use it on glossy and non glossy screens, and it works great every time.

Also, double check your MacBook box. Sometime late last year, Apple began shipping soft gray cloths with MacBooks and displays. The more often you use the cloth, the easier it is to keep your screen clear of dust and prints.

I looked through my macbook box half expecting to find a nice gray cloth - no such luck. But it got me thinking that I could use the cloth i got from my optometrist for cleaning my glasses - worked a treat!

Lots of people have been asking me this over the past five or six years so I wrote a short post on this on my blog. I have been using an Isopropyl Alcohol-based solution that I make myself (you can purchase 90-99% pure Isopropyl Alcohol and distilled water from your nearest pharmacy/chemist). It works great, I’ve used it for years on LCD screens without any problems. And it costs more than order of magnitude less than commercial products that — in most cases — are exactly the same thing :)

An even more troublesome powerbook cleaning problem is the trackpad. Does anyone have any tips on that?

I use a slightly moistened lint-free cloth on my Powerbook G4’s aluminum surfaces. For the screen and trackpad I use a 20-35% isopropyl alcohol solution only when a moistened cloth is insufficient.
