Cataloging Media

Q

I have a collection of about 2500 DVDs. A couple weeks ago, I bought a movie I already owned. Thankfully, I realized it once I got it home and returned it. The problem is…it’s happened three more times since then. I need help! I mean, I have a movie addiction, but that’s not so much the problem. Where I really need help is figuring how not to duplicate my purchases. Any ideas?

I have about 1500 DVDs, so I know how confusing it can be when you’re picking out a movie and trying to remember if you already have it or not. What you need to do is catalog your DVDs and be able to have access to the list whether you’re in the store, or shopping online. Delicious Library does just that. You can catalog not only DVDs, but also books, CDs and video games. Here’s how it works. You use a firewire digital camera to the barcode on your media and Delicious Library will grab all the information and input it into your library. You can categories your media into virtual shelves to easily sort through your catalog.

Once you have your library set up, you can copy it over to your iPod to browse while you’re in the store or you can print it. It’s $40 and Mac only. MediaMan is the same idea for Windows users and is also $40.

    Cali,

I agree with your selection of Delicious Library as a solution to cataloging a variety of media. Got it, use it, love it.

Just one thing. I use mine with a USB webcam. The iMage USB webcam from Ecamm network works well with USB2.0 capable Macs and Windows PCs.

The price is competitive, and there are no special drives to load. Works with iChat, iMovie, etc. The fact act is I haven’t found anything it doesn’t work with.

Actually, on Windows, you can use the freeware Libra instead:

No need to fork out $40 :)
