Catagorizing Movies/TV Shows in iTunes

Q

Here’s what I’m trying to do. I have TV shows in *.mp4 format on my computer. When I load them into iTunes, iTunes recognizes them as a movie not TV shows. Is there a way to embed the info about that show before adding it to iTunes, like the category is a TV show, episode and
season #, year, etc…

A

The information you’re wanting to embed is called ID3 tags. ID3 tags include metadata that tell iTunes (or any other music player) information about the file…things like artist name, or whether its a movie or a TV show. What you’re looking for is an ID3 tag editor.

iTunes is an ID3 tag editor. You can also get a separate editor, like AudioShell for Windows. Either way, you’re going to need to take an extra step to tell iTunes how to categorize your video. To me, using iTunes is easiest, since that’s where your video ends up. All you need to do is right click on the file, click on “Get Info” then browse through the tabs and fill out all the information you want to be known. The “Video” tab is where you can choose the file to be “Movie” or “TV Show”.

With most ID3 tag editors, and with iTunes, you can enter the information in batches if you have multiple files.

UPDATE: Thanks to Nejc, who pointed out I didn’t make it clear enough about editing batches in iTunes.  When editing the tags of multiple files at once, you can edit many of the tags, but not all of them.  To edit whether it’s a TV Show or a Movie, you’ll need to do that individually.  Sorry for the confusion!  It kind of sucks that they do it that way.

I tried the AudioShell, works great for mp3’s. But not that great on video.
I have used the ‘get info’ in iTunes to change all the tags in my videos to either ‘movie’ or ‘tv shows’. It works great. The problem is when I remove the video file from iTunes and import the video back in, iTunes forgets all the ‘get info’ tags i filled in. The only thing it remembers is the poster.
I would like to figure this out because I recently had to format, so when I imported my dozens and dozens of shows, I had to manually go into each video again and change the category back to a TV show.
Sorry about not being very clear the first time.Thanks.
