Alias File when Burning a DVD

Q

I’m on a Mac, and have burned DVDs many times. I usually consider myself to be pretty technically savvy, but today when I went to burn a DVD, it’s creating an alias, not copying the files over. Why?

A

In Tiger and Leopard, the burn process was sped by creating an alias in the burn folder. You identify an alias by the black arrow at the bottom of the icon.

This alias points to the information on your computer, and the data is copied during the burning process.

To burn a data DVD on a Mac, you right click on the desktop and choose “Create New Burn Folder”. Then you can open the burn folder window, drag your files over, and click “Burn”.

You can force it to copy instead of creating an alias. Drag the files into the burn folder, but before you let go, hold down the Alt button and then let go.
